Leslie S Phipps
September 19, 1939 - March 30, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Leslie Sylvester Phipps, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, who transitioned from labor to reward on March 30, 2025. Born on September 19, 1939, in Newark, NJ, Leslie was the youngest of eight children born to Samuel and Nellie Phipps. In 1944, the Phipps family relocated to Montclair, NJ, where Leslie attended Hillside Elementary School. In 1952, they moved to East Orange, NJ, where he attended Lincoln Junior High School before graduating from East Orange High School in 1957. During his high school years, Leslie excelled in track, a testament to his dedication and perseverance. Leslie pursued higher education at Rutgers University, majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Data Processing and Technology. He entered the rapidly evolving field of technology at the perfect time, securing a position with IBM Corporation in 1969. Over the course of 25 years, Leslie held various roles, including Financial Analyst, Computer Operations Specialist, Telecommunications Expert, and Systems Analyst. He ultimately served as Manager of Data Processing Operations, supporting 162 marketing branch offices in the region. Leslie was proficient in multiple computer systems, including Lotus 1-2-3, PS/2 Computers, and large mainframe systems. His leadership, expertise, and mentorship helped to shape the landscape of IBM, where he remained until his retirement in 1994. In 1996, Leslie met the love of his life, Yvonne Morris. It was truly love at first sight. A few months after their first meeting, they were married and celebrated their honeymoon in Paris, France. They built a beautiful life together in West Orange, NJ, sharing a passion for travel, golf, and social gatherings with cherished friends and family. Leslie was an avid sports enthusiast but had a particular love for golf. He took great pride in teaching his granddaughter how to play and, in 2011, became a member of the Metuchen Golf and Country Club, where he and Yvonne enjoyed making new friendships, dining, and, of course, playing golf. Leslie is survived by his devoted wife, Yvonne, his loving son, Dorian, and three adored grandchildren: Monique, London, and Quinton. He also leaves behind his daughters-in-law, Carla and Felicia, his beloved brother, Eugene, and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Samuel and Nellie, his beloved son, Sean, and his siblings: Ernest, Walter, Joseph, George, Angela, and Harold. Leslie Phipps' legacy of kindness, leadership, and unwavering dedication to family and friends will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His impact was profound, and though he will be deeply missed, his memory will continue to inspire
