Mercedes Coley-Brown, fondly referred to as "Mercy-Dees" and most often called "Aunt Mercy," was born on October 23, 1933, in Ochlocknee, Georgia. Raised in Thomasville, Georgia, she attended Douglass High School, where she played and developed a lifelong love for the game of basketball.
At the age of 19, Mercy left Thomasville and moved to Newark, New Jersey, where she met and married Joseph L. Brown. Together, they raised one daughter, Erika Brown.
Mercy pursued a career in the medical field, working at several hospitals before finding her true calling in medical accounting. She dedicated herself to this profession until her retirement in 2011. In 2013, she moved to South Carolina to spend time with her beloved nieces, Cheryl and Roslind. Later, she returned to Thomasville to be with her mother, Coretha, and sister, Kelsey-Ann, before moving back to New Jersey in 2018.
A passionate traveler, Mercy shared many adventures with her grandson and sidekick, Aaron. Her journeys were filled with love and joy, creating cherished memories for both of them.
Mercy was preceded in death by her mother, Coretha Williams, her beloved sisters, Eddie Mae Curry and Kelsey-Ann Williams, and her husband, Joseph L. Brown. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Erika Brown; her grandson, Aaron Hobbs; her niece, Roslind Davis, whom she loved like a daughter; and many other nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mercy's warm spirit, love for life, and dedication to her family will be deeply missed. Her legacy of love, strength, and resilience, will live on in the hearts of those who knew her.
