It is with deep sorrow and heartfelt remembrance that we announce the passing of Marshal David Coles, who departed this life on July 18, 2026, at the age of 56. Born on December 1, 1969, in Newark, New Jersey, Marshal was a proud son of Ezel Coles and Caroline Garretson Coles. He spent his formative years in New Jersey attending 14th Avenue and 15th Avenue Elementary schools, in Newark. He later graduated from East Orange High School in 1987, where he developed the determination and work ethic that would guide him throughout his life.

A firm believer in the power of education, Marshal continued his academic journey by earning a bachelor's degree in business administration from Caldwell University in 1992. His passion for learning and professional development led him to further his studies at Montclair State University, where he earned a master's degree in counseling in 2002. His educational achievements reflected his commitment to excellence and his desire to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those around him.

Marshal was known for his kind heart, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to family, friends, colleagues, and community. He also had a love for sports history, especially boxing and football. These were passions he shared with his father. Annual excursions to the Capital Jazz Fest were another high priority event he looked forward to and shared with friends.

He possessed a quiet strength and a genuine compassion that left an impression on everyone he met. Whether offering guidance, lending a helping hand, or sharing words of encouragement, Marshal touched countless lives through his work at Bloomfield College, St. Peters University, and William Paterson University.

He will be remembered for his steadfast faith, his devotion to lifelong learning, and his ability to inspire others through both his actions and his example. His legacy lives on in the many people whose lives were enriched by his presence.

Marshal David Coles leaves behind cherished brothers Dean Garretson, and James Young. Cousin Linzie Coles, lifelong brother Dr. Patrick J. Lamy, dear friends, former classmates, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Though he is no longer with us in body, his spirit, values, and memories will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him.
