Peter Louis Pirrello passed away peacefully on Saturday April 4, 2020 at Cranes Mill in West Caldwell. He was 95.
Pete was born and raised in Montclair, NJ. He was married to Ann Purrazzo (deceased) in 1952 and lived in Caldwell since 1954.
Pete worked as a bricklayer/mason for Local 4 and worked on many projects in the area including James Caldwell High School in West Caldwell.
During World War II, Pete was drafted into the Army in August of 1943 and served until the end of the war in May 1945. He was a Sergeant as part of the 104th Infantry Division, K-Company 415th Regimen as a machine gunner. The 104th Division was one of the first divisions to fight their battles after dark and they were known as "night fighters". During the war, Pete fought battles in Germany including the Battle of the Bulge where he was awarded the Bronze Star. He was also part of a unit that captured the City of Cologne, Germany and liberated a Prisoner of War Camp in Nordhausen, Germany.
Pete was an avid bowler and is a member of the New Jersey State Bowling Hall of Fame as well as the Essex County and Passaic County Bowling Hall of Fames. During his bowling career, he bowled (4) 300 games including his last one in 2006 at the age of 81 making him at the time, the oldest person to ever bowl a perfect game in the State of New Jersey.
Pete was an active member in the community where he was a member of the Old Guard, the American Legion Post 185, the Caldwell-West Caldwell Seniors, the Caldwell Transportation Committee and an usher at St. Aloysius Church. In 2015, he was the Grand Marshal of the West Essex Memorial Day Parade.
Pete was a huge sports fan who always rooted for the "local" teams especially the Yankees. In recent years he loved watching his grandson Nick play baseball and basketball. He enjoyed playing bocce' ball with his friends at Notre Dame Church and always looked forward to the annual father and son bocce' ball tournament where he was a past MVP.
Pete was predeceased by his wife Ann (nee Purrazzo), his brother Anthony, sister Anna (Lombardi) and son Joseph. He is survived by his son Peter and his daughter in-law Theresa, his daughter in-law Nancy Pirrello (O'Hern), his grandchildren, Michele and her husband Tim O'Dell, Michael and his wife Nicole (Farina), Nicole and her husband Louie Gonzalez and his grandson Nicholas Pirrello as well as his great grandchildren, Colin, Serafina, Julia, Joseph, Luciana, Nathan and Nolan. He is also survived by his companion Jane Young.
Arrangements are being made at Caggiano Memorial Home. A private burial will be at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Montclair.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Vero Amici for Charity, P.O. Box 1264, West Caldwell, NJ 07007. A Mass of celebration of his life will be held at a future date to be determined.
