Robert(Bob) Gleason, age 73, passed away peacefully at home in Livingston, NJ on Tuesday, August 27, 2019. He was born the son of Thomas and Irene Gleason of Jersey City, on May 26, 1946. Robert attended St Aloysius HS in Jersey City, where he excelled in varsity swimming and basketball. He graduated from Montclair State University in 1967, majoring in Health and Physical Education. At MSU, Bob played varsity basketball for 4 years , and was named an NCAA Little All-American. The college sponsored a prestigious "Bob Gleason Day" on February 26, 1968, recognizing his athletic achievements. Bob taught Physical Ed and drivers Ed in the Montclair School district. He coached basketball, tennis, and the soccer team, retiring after more than 35 years in education. For many years, Bob was actively involved in the Essex County Chapter of the Special Olympics, which he continued throughout his retirement. He is survived by his ex-wife, Elaine Pennella Gleason, one sister, Rita (Gay) Viggiano, and her husband , John, and 4 nieces and 1 nephew. Viewing will be held at the Caggiano Funeral Home, 62 Grove St, Montclair, on Thursday, August 29, from 4:00 to 8:00PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St Philips Church, 797 Valley Road, Clifton,NJ on Friday, August 30, at 10:00am, interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Special Olympics Organization.
