Obituary

On Wednesday, February 22, 2023, Salvatore "Sam" Nicholas Miele, loving husband, father, and
grandfather, passed away at age 89.

Sam was born on July 15, 1933 in Newark, New Jersey to Angelo and Maria Miele, both of
whom immigrated from Italy to the United States as teenagers. While growing up in Montclair,
New Jersey with his four siblings, Sam attended Nishuane Elementary School, Hillside Middle
School, and Montclair High School. In 1948, Sam began working with his father, who owned a
sanitation business. Over the course of forty-two years, Sam helped his family's business,
Angelo Miele & Sons, to grow and thrive with his innovative and forward-thinking ideas. On
October 11, 1959, Sam married Jane (Guardabascio) Miele and they raised one daughter, Maria.
At every stage of his life, Sam showed himself to be the very embodiment of generosity and hard
work. Whether he was playing football, running a business, or simply enjoying time with friends
and family, Sam was known for his contagious smile, big heart, and his unfaltering ability to put
others' needs before his own. A devout Catholic, respected businessman, natural storyteller,
trusted friend, and beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Sam will be missed greatly by all
who had the pleasure and honor of knowing him.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Angelo and Maria Miele, his brother, Chris Miele, his
wife, Jane Miele, and his son-in-law, Joseph Pagliuca. He is survived by his two sisters, Jeanette
Cummings and Rosemarie Ferrara, his brother, Joseph Miele, his daughter, Maria Pagliuca, and
his two grandchildren, Joseph Pagliuca, Jr. and Samantha Pagliuca. Visiting hours will be on
Monday, February 27th from 4 – 8 PM at Caggiano Memorial Home, 62 Grove Street,
Montclair, NJ. A funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, February 28th at 10 AM at Notre Dame
Church, 359 Central Avenue, North Caldwell, NJ. An entombment will follow at Holy Cross
Cemetery, 340 Ridge Road, North Arlington, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American
Heart Association would be greatly appreciated.
