Salvatore Sgroi, 89, lovingly known as Sam or Uncle Sam, passed away peacefully on February 24th, 2023. Visiting hours Friday, March 3rd from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Caggiano Memorial, 62 Grove Street, Montclair.
Salvatore was a wonderful, loving, caring, brother, uncle, and godfather, always ready to help someone. Born on March 26th, 1933 to immigrant parents from Sicily, he grew up in Montclair and in later years resided in Bloomfield. He graduated from Montclair High School in 1951, and went on to attend Upsala College from 1951 to 1955.
Salvatore joined the army and served in Japan and Korea during the Korean War. He was a mathematical wizard and worked in finance at Prudential, EF Hutton and Shearson Lehman until he retired.
He enjoyed most sports and played basketball and football in his school years, and later in life enjoyed bowling and golfing. He was an avid Yankees, Giants and Rangers fan. He loved a Domino's Pizza with a cold Coors Light.
Salvatore is remembered as an inspirational godfather and father figure to his niece Kathie, and great nephew Michael.
He is predeceased by his parents Caterina and Salvatore, two brothers Alfred and Louis, and one sister Rose, who he lovingly helped care for in her last days. He is survived by three nieces Katherine Miller, Joyce Sgroi and Lynn Dempsey, one nephew Darryl Sgroi, three great nephews Michael Bronco, Tim Dempsey and Daniel Sgroi, one great niece Lauryn Holden, and two great, great nieces Ryan and Noah Dempsey. He also is survived by extended family Dave Martina, Sophia Antonopoulos, Kelly Sgroi, Phil Dempsey, Danielle Dempsey and Mark Holden.
