Van B. Winston, Sr., of Montclair, passed away on Tuesday, October 9th, 2018. Visiting will be on Tuesday, October 16th from 10-11am, at Caggiano Memorial, 62 Grove St, Montclair. Caggianomemorial.com. Entombment at Glendale Cemetery to follow.
Mr. Winston moved to Montclair at a young age. After graduating from Montclair High School in 1936, he held various jobs in town prior to becoming a substitute postal letter carrier. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1941 and served in the South Pacific Theater, Guadalcanal. Van met his wife of sixty-six years, Catherine, while preparing for deployment in the second World War. After being honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant he returned to Montclair and employment with the United States Postal Service, until he retired in 1973. Upon retirement, he worked as a school crossing guard until 1987.
Van is survived by his children Shirley Winston Satterwhite, Sylvia Winston Green, Michael Winston and Van Buren Winston Jr, and by 11 grandchildren, and a host of great & great-great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his wife Catherine Winston, and by his daughters, Joyce Middleton, and Jo-Ann Winston.
