Wayne C. DeSmet, 60, passed away Friday, June 20, 2025.
Wayne lived most of his life in New Jersey. Before beginning his law enforcement career, he proudly served in the United States Navy. He went on to serve with the Montclair Police Department for over 20 years, working in patrol, SWAT, and narcotics before retiring as a Lieutenant.
In 2006, Wayne and his family relocated to the Winterville area, where he worked in facilities management with UNX-Christeyns. He was also an active member of Ignite Church, where he served joyfully in ushering and parking.
Known for his willingness to help others, Wayne was the go-to handyman for neighbors and church friends alike. He loved music in the park, attending air shows, taking long walks, and getting in a good workout. He had a big sweet tooth, and even more so, a bigger heart—nothing mattered more to him than spending time with his family.
Wayne never met a stranger. He was quick with a joke, quicker to make new friends, and always put others before himself. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Theresa DeSmet; brother, Philip "Buddy" DeSmet; and sister, Lorraine Safko.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Lucia DeSmet; children, Wayne DeSmet, Jr. and wife, Joann, Brianna Owens and husband, Connor; Andrew DeSmet, and Jessica DeSmet; grandchildren, Justin DeSmet and Deanna DeSmet; in-laws, James and Rosanne Mulhearn;and a number of nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to Ignite Church, 4150 Bayswater Rd, Winterville, NC 28590 or a charity of one's choice in his name.
